OPD III

The OPD III is a versatile diagnostic instrument providing comprehensive analysis of the patient’s refractive status. It is a combination of multiple instruments providing faster and accurate data to aid in pre and post op care. The OPD has the following instruments built in: wavefront abberometer, topographer, auto refractometer, pupillometer and pupillographer.

Wavefront abberometry provides essential information about the visual acuity, the refractive status and corneal curvature. The pupil diameter changes under varying light conditions which affects the refractive status, the OPD measures both the day and night refraction. A simulated visual acuity chart demonstrates the quality of the patient’s vision before and after correction according to the type of abberations.

Corneal topography presents colour coded maps and numerical data over the corneal surface which assists with pre and post op assessment of patients. This information is useful for detecting diseases such as keratoconus. After crosslinking or ferrara ring insertion the practioner uses these maps to establish whether the keratoconus has stabilised.

Auto keratometer measures the corneal curvature, corneal power and the amount of corneal astigmatism. Novel corneal surface descriptors aid in determining the power of the Intraocular lens (IOL) that the ophthalmologist would need for patients who have had prior corneal surgery.

The Auto refractometer enlightens the practioner about the patient’s refractive status under varying light conditions. It is useful to establish the patient’s prescription before surgery in order to determine the best treatment plan for the patient. Auto refractometer is also useful after cataract surgery or laser procedures to determine whether the aimed target refraction was achieved. If keratoconus has been stabilised with the insertion of Ferrara rings a significant improvement is often noticed with regards to the astigmatism.

Pupillometer and pupillographer measures the pupil diameter under varying light conditions as this can affect the refractive status. After cataract surgery it can be established whether or not the Intra ocular lens is centred properly as the pupil centre and corneal light reflex are provided.

The OPD III allows the practioner to examine multiple summaries for individual patient needs. The following summaries are available: cataract, toric IOL, optical quality summary, white to white summary, retro illumination image, comparison map and an overview summary.

The retro illumination can be utilised as a teaching tool for patients to illustrate cataracts, vacuoles on the lens and floaters. Patients with encroaching pterygiums can view the corneal distortion with the aid of placido rings.
