Intrastromal Rings

Intrastromal Rings are used in patients with progressive ectatic corneal disease such as keratoconus with the aim of flattening the cornea and reducing the irregular astigmatism. Worldwide more than 180000 Intrastromal Rings have been implanted. Due to the advanced studies and nomagrams, the current Intrastromal Ring offers improved visual acuity and predictability.

The Intrastromal Ring(such as Ferrara rings, intacs or Kerarings) is made out of yellow PMMA plastic which is 100 % biocompatible.

Patients with keratoconus that have progressive steepening of the cornea with consequential worsening of visual acuity (both aided and unaided) and intolerance to contact lens wear are suitable candidates for Intrastromal Ring implantation. Patients with high astigmatism after corneal transplants, high irregular astigmatism, ectatic disorders (Pellucid marginal degeneration) and corneal ectasia after Excimer laser are also suitable candidates for Intrastromal Ring implantation.

The selection of the ring size depends on the type of keratoconus, location of the cone on the cornea and the asphericity of the cornea and pachymmetry. Depending on the type and severity of keratoconus, patients may require a single segment or two segments to be inserted.

The advantages of Intrastromal Rings include corneal structure preservation and stabilization of keratoconus. The ring segments can be extracted or repositioned as required by the surgeon. Intrastromal Rings cannot fully correct the refractive error and therefore patients are still required to wear either spectacles or contact lenses after the procedure. The insertion of Intrastromal Rings can be combined with other procedures such as ICL’s or crosslinking for the maximum benefit of the patient.

The procedure lasts approximately 15 minutes and is performed using topical anesthetic. The corneal channels are created using a computer guided Femto second laser. The patient can go home shortly after the procedure.
