As part of its contribution to National Eye Awareness Week, the Sandhurst Eye Clinic has given 26-year-old Andrea Lewis sight for life.

Lewis was born deaf and with myopic astigmatism which left her totally dependent on thick lens glasses for her short sightedness.

Being an ophthalmic surgeon who specialises in iLASIK treatment, Dr Mark Deist of the clinic agreed to do the procedure for free.

The iLASIK eye laser treatment is approved by American space organisation, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and only takes minutes to complete. According to the iLASIK website, a laser is used to reshape the cornea and correct the refractive imperfections in eyes.

“It is deemed as one of the safest most effective eye treatments in the world,” said Deist. Lewis, who works at the national gallery in Cape Town said she now has 95% vision and the rest will return within a month.

The Lewis family said they would donate the money that was supposed to be spent on the procedure to three charities of their choice.

The Sandhurst Eye Clinic has also conducted free corneal transplants and cataract operations as part of their contribution towards National Eye Awareness Week.
