Cataracts are clouding of the crystalline lens reducing the visual acuity as the amount of light passing through the opacified lens is reduced. The clouding of the lens causes a myopic shift in the patient’s prescription. Patients might find the need to frequently replace their spectacles due to the changing refractive status, however the spectacles may provide minimal improvement to their visual acuity. Age related cataracts account for 48% of world blindness.

Patients with cataracts complain of halos, glare, double vision (diplopia) and light sensitivity. Due to the clouding of the crystalline lens the vision becomes blurred and patients have difficulty distinguishing colours and have reduced contrast sensitivity. They often talk about their vision appearing “dim”.

Cataracts are mostly age related however they can occur due to trauma or be of a congenital nature. Diabetes, prolonged use of certain medication and excessive UV exposure can increase ones chance of developing cataracts.

Cataract surgery involves the removal of the cloudy crystalline lens through tiny incisions made in the side of the cornea by a technique called phaco emulsification, a high frequency ultrasound. Once the crystalline lens is broken down it is aspirated through the incisions and an Intra ocular lens (IOL) is inserted. The procedure is performed using topical anesthetic eye drops and no sutures are required. The duration of the procedure is approximately 30 minutes and the patient may leave the hospital shortly thereafter.

Tecnis Symfony

The Tecnis Symfony Extended Range of Vision IOL helps correct presbyopia by providing high quality vision ranging seamlessly from near to far under all light conditions.

The Tecnis Symfony Toric Extended Range of Vision IOL in addition corrects astigmatism.

The aim of these premium lenses is to obtain spectacle independence. This is achieved by using two technologies in conjunction, namely

  • The elongation of the focus of the eye to provide extended range of vision
  • To correct chromatic aberration thereby allowing sharp vision in varying lighting conditions.

Please read further under procedures about the various IOL’s that Dr Deist uses depending on the patients requirements as there are special intraocular lenses that can treat astigmatism and alleviate the need for reading glasses.
